About Minecraft versions

Minecraft has been evolving for over 14 years, and during that time hundreds of versions have been released — from the first test builds in 2009 to modern updates like 1.21. Through KLauncher you can download any of them: a stable release to play with friends, a snapshot to try out new features, or a Release Candidate to test before the patch goes live.

Version types

  • Release

    Release

The stable version of the game. These numbers — 1.21.5, 1.20.6, 1.19.4 — are what most servers and modpacks use. If you're not sure what to pick, grab the latest release.

  • Snapshot

    Snapshot

Weekly test build with new mechanics and blocks. Formatted as 25w15a, where 25 is the year and 15 is the week. Good for players who want to try future content first.

  • Pre-Release

    Pre-Release

An almost-final release where Mojang catches the last remaining bugs. Feature-lock is closed, only fixes go in.

  • RC

    Release Candidate

The final stage before release. If the RC contains no critical bugs, it becomes the new stable version in 3–7 days.

FAQ

Which Minecraft version is the most popular?

Historically — 1.12.2 (because of mods) and 1.8.9 (PvP). Among modern versions — the latest 1.20.x and 1.21.x releases: most servers run them and current content works there.

What's the difference between a snapshot and a release?

A snapshot is a test build Mojang publishes every Wednesday. It may contain bugs and its saves are incompatible with regular worlds. A release is a stable version suitable for long-term play.

Can I play old mods on a new version?

No. Mods are tied to a specific Minecraft version and its loader (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge). To run a 1.12.2 mod you need 1.12.2 itself.

Do I need a license to download versions?

KLauncher lets you play under your KLauncher account without a Mojang license on third-party servers. Official Minecraft.net servers still require a license.
